LYRA
We were walking along the upper terrace when my mother stopped.
No reason for it. She simply stopped and looked up. I took another step before I noticed, then turned back. She stood still, watching the sky, worry tensing her face. I raised my eyes to the sky.
The sky was ordinary.
For now.
Velara’s upper terrace was the most beautiful place in the city, or so everyone said, and I loved being here, until that day. Wide ledges of light stone stepped down toward the central square, where trees with silvery leaves grew. They sang, quietly, whenever the wind touched their crowns. A memory of Lyra, people said. Of worlds destroyed before I was born.
We’d left early that morning: my mother wanted to reach the market before noon, before the hot wind rose off the plains. I walked beside her, holding her hand, a habit from childhood I’d never outgrown. Velara went about its usual life around us. Merchants setting out their goods, children playing on the lower steps, the air smelling of herbs and spices.
Everything was as it always was.
Until the moment my mother stopped.
I looked where she was looking.
Nothing, at first. Then I saw them.
Three black ships hung in the sky — too low, too still, as if someone had cut them out of another reality and set them into ours without asking.
People around us began to stop walking.
We all knew about the Orion wars. Everyone had heard that somewhere out past our system, something had been happening for a long time. But here on Velara, the last few decades had been quiet, quiet enough that we’d let ourselves believe quiet was simply how things were.
“Let’s go,” my mother said.
Quietly. Almost calm.
But her hand closed around mine, hard, hard enough to hurt. I understood then. She already knew what was coming. She always knew, before anything happened.
Lyrian blood, my father used to say, when he thought I couldn’t hear. They feel what hasn’t happened yet.
We ran.
One of the ships shifted, and a beam dropped from its underside. Blue, cold, dark at its source and nearly white where it touched the ground. Two more ships followed the first, sweeping their beams across the square, over the crowd, over the stalls, over the children on the steps.
They were searching for something. Or someone.
“Run!” my mother screamed.
Not said. Screamed. For the first time that day, the first time in my memory, her voice broke.
I didn’t make it.
The beam caught me, and the whole world cut off in a single wrench. Laughter, voices, the wind moving through the silvery leaves, all of it gone at once, like a door slammed shut between me and the world. My body stopped answering to me, as if it had stopped being mine.
I managed to turn my head.
My mother was there, half a step away, and in that second, a beam from another ship reached her too. Her face was turned toward mine, and there was no fear in it. Something else was there instead, something I’d rarely seen in her and never had a name for. As if she’d known this moment would come. As if all that was left to do was be beside me when it did.
That was the last thing I remembered.
Then everything dissolved.
I didn’t know how much time had passed. Didn’t know where I was.
Only darkness, and a silence that wasn’t silence at all.
Then something changed. Gradually, the way the sky changes before dawn. Light first, distant. Then a sound, quiet, almost musical, as if something vast and alive had taken a breath. Then a surface beneath me, smooth, faintly warm, yielding slightly under my hands.
I tried to open my eyes. It didn’t happen right away.
Above me, a curved ceiling, light, half-transparent, threaded with lines that pulsed with a faint light. Slow. Even. Like breathing.
I was lying inside something enclosed. Something like a capsule.
Memory returned all at once, whole, in a single blow: the terrace, the black ships, the blue beam, my mother’s hand.
A shadow appeared outside.
Someone approached. I could see a tall shape through the capsule’s translucent lid, standing still. Just standing there.
I didn’t know who it was. Didn’t know where I was. The last thing I remembered was black ships in the sky, and the light that had taken us both.
The lid began to open, slowly, with a quiet sound, smooth, as if deliberately gentle, so as not to frighten me. Cool air touched my face.
I saw him.
Tall, in a white uniform. Hair fair, almost white, a few strands falling along his face. Strong, clear features. Blue eyes.
Our eyes met.
And something happened.
Not a flash. Not a blow. Quieter than that — like a string inside me trembling, a string I hadn’t known was there.
For one impossible moment, I thought I had seen those eyes before. Not here. Not now. Under a different sky, in a different world.
The feeling vanished as quickly as it came, leaving behind only confusion and a kind of emptiness, as if I’d forgotten something that mattered.
I didn’t know this man. Couldn’t have known him.
And still, some part of me refused to believe that.
I wanted to ask where my mother was. Wanted to ask where I was. Wanted to ask why they’d brought me here.
But a different question came out first.
“Who are you?”
He didn’t answer right away. For a few seconds he only looked at me.
There was such a mix of pain and recognition in his eyes that I went still, unable to explain where either could have come from, when I was seeing him for the first time.
“Aelion,” he said finally.
And something in the sound of his voice, the way he said it, echoed in me with a strange ache for something long since lost.
As if I’d heard it before.
A very long time ago.
In another life.

AELION
We were on patrol along the border between Federation space and Draco territory, two escort ships holding formation behind us, when Arian broke the silence.
“Sensor contact. Draco signatures, decloaking on our side of the border.”
No alarm in his voice. Only focus.
“Confirmed?”
“Confirmed. Draco signatures, not ours.”
I was already rising from the chair.
If Arian was reporting this himself, there was little room left for doubt.
Arian was my starship, flagship of the Pleiadian fleet.
Not just a warship, and not just an artificial intelligence. He was a living being, as much as a fourth-dimensional ship could be alive. He thought, argued, drew his own conclusions, and often allowed himself opinions I hadn’t asked for.
“Report.”
The tactical map was already unfolding in front of me.
“Three Draco ships. Vega system. Low orbit over Velara.” The planet’s name meant nothing to me.
“World’s status?”
“Agrarian civilization. Early-stage industrialization. No orbital defense. No means of detection either.” He paused, briefly. I knew that pause too well. “The pattern matches the last four incursions exactly. They’re not here for resources.”
I already knew what came next.
“For people?”
“Yes.”
The Draco incursions over the last few weeks had all followed the same pattern. Draco ships appeared along the old Vega corridor, struck undefended worlds inside Federation territory, took what they came for, and vanished before our forces could close the distance. They never touched local ships, never took equipment, never showed interest in minerals. What they wanted was women, carriers of an ancient bloodline. They knew exactly what they were looking for, scanning crowds and gatherings for the energy signatures that interested them, and moved in the moment they found a match.
I’d read dozens of reports like this one. Today I was about to see it firsthand.
“Time to intercept?”
“Eleven minutes, if we commit to hyperspace now.”
“Forward.”
“Already engaged.”
Space shuddered around the ship. The stars stretched into lines of light and vanished. Only the route, the speed, and the countdown remained on the tactical display.
Eleven minutes. Too long. Somewhere ahead, under Velara’s sky, people were still living an ordinary life, not yet knowing the war had already reached their world.
“Report,” I said, a little past the halfway point.
“Transport beam activity confirmed,” Arian said. “Upper terrace. Market square. High population density.” A brief pause. “They’re operating in the open.”
“Not hiding?”
“No.”
That was new. Until now the Draco had been careful about witnesses. Something had changed.
“Why the shift?”
“Velara has no means of communication that could reach anyone capable of intervening.”
He was right. To the people below, this looked like an unexplainable disaster. Even if someone survived to describe it, no one beyond the planet would ever hear.
Less than a minute to exit.
Three ship markers hung on the display. Two of them had begun to drift. The third held still.
“Target status.”
“Alpha and Beta are preparing to jump. Escort ships moving to intercept, but they won’t close the gap in time.”
“Gamma?”
“Still holding position. Likely still loading.”
That settled it.
“Gamma’s the target.”
“Confirmed.”
Space regained its depth around us. We dropped out of hyperspace.
Three Draco ships still hung over the planet. Alpha and Beta were already sliding into transit, exactly as Arian had warned during the jump. Gamma held its position, still loading, still ours to take.
“Alpha and Beta beginning transit,” Arian said, level as ever. “Escort ships didn’t close the distance in time. Intercept not possible.”
I didn’t answer. The calculation was already done. Chase them now and we’d lose the third as well, and losing the third meant losing everyone still aboard it.
“Gamma, then.”
“Yes.”
“Main gun.”
“Charged.”
“Configuration?”
“Recommend a wide-band pulse into the power core.”
I’d already reached the same conclusion. A hit like that wouldn’t breach the hull. It would simply flood every system on board past what it could carry. Weapons. Shields. Navigation. Communications. All of it, at once, while the people inside stayed alive.
“Fire.”
Arian’s main gun flared, a short white arc. The beam struck Gamma across the stern. For a moment the ship seemed to hang frozen. Then its running lights died, one after another. The shields dropped. The weapons went dark. On the tactical display, nearly every system on board turned gray.
“Impact confirmed,” Arian said. “Reactor held the load. Life support functioning. Crew alive.”
Exactly what I’d been aiming for.
The escort ships fired as the portals closed, a parting shot that did no real damage but sent its own message: this border didn’t cross without a price. The other two ships had already slipped into transit, their portals sealing shut behind them. Those were gone now. But the third one wasn’t.
“Match velocity with Gamma.”
“Executing.”
“Prepare to dock.”
“Strike team’s ready.”
I gave a short nod. Time to finish what we’d come here to do.
The strike team had gathered at the airlock before docking finished. Five of us. On operations like this, we didn’t use names. Only numbers. Safer that way. I was One.
“Airlock sealed,” Arian reported. “No movement detected aboard.”
“Open it.”
The door slid apart without a sound. Emergency red lighting lit the corridor beyond. Arian’s strike had done exactly what we’d calculated, the ship’s power grid was still holding, but most of its systems remained dead. That bought us a few minutes’ advantage. Sooner or later, their crew would come to and start bringing the systems back online.
The Draco ship met us with a smell every one of their vessels carried, bitter, metallic, the kind that settled deep in the throat and stayed there long after the operation ended. I knew that smell too well.
We moved in.
“Biosignatures,” Three said quietly, checking the scanner. “Six Draco. All in the forward and engine sections.” He frowned. “And one human.”
I looked at the display. A single marker, set apart from the rest.
“Confirm that.”
“Confirmed.” He checked it again. “Isolated compartment. Not the main cargo bay.”
I’d braced for dozens of captives.
“Recent capture?”
“Field signature reads minutes old. Paralysis beam. Consciousness fully suppressed.”
Which meant we had almost no time at all.
“Move.”
While their crew was still recovering, the advantage was ours.
We met the first Draco at the next turn, still trying to stand. A blast from Three’s energy blaster dropped him back against the bulkhead. The second reached for his own blaster and didn’t make it. The other four went down one after another under short bursts from blasters. Within moments the sensors read no more movement in the corridors.
“Sector clear,” Two reported.
“Continue.”
The compartment sat at the end of a short side corridor. A small transport cell. A narrow berth with restraints. Nothing else.
She lay motionless. Fair hair spread across the pillow. Plain travel clothes. The restraints held her wrists.
I stopped, just for a moment, then closed the distance.
“Field readings,” I said.
Six was already bent over her, running the scanner along her body.
“Direct hit from a paralysis beam. No external damage. Consciousness fully suppressed, she won’t come out of it on her own for hours.” She glanced at the readout. “Field’s unstable. The sooner she’s in a healing capsule, the easier the recovery.”
“Understood.”
I leaned down and freed her wrists from the restraints. The moment my hands touched her, something inside me lurched. I knew this hand. I knew this woman, the one from a world already gone, the one I had lost once before.
“One?”
Six’s voice pulled me back.
“She’s ready.”
I lifted her carefully. She swayed slightly against me, and I found myself pulling her closer than the moment required, as if it mattered that she not feel even that small motion, though I knew she couldn’t feel anything at all right now.
“One?” Six said again, quieter. “Field’s still unstable. Recommend getting her into the capsule as soon as possible.”
“We’re moving.”
We left the compartment as fast as we’d entered it. Six Draco were still unconscious. No reason to linger.
Arian’s medical bay was ready before we’d fully returned aboard. Leia met us at the entrance.
“Here.”
I set the girl down on the diagnostic platform and stepped back, letting the medics work. Leia ran the scan fast, then paused. Her eyes stayed on the display a moment too long. She checked it again.
“Something wrong?” I asked.
“No.” She didn’t look up right away. “Just… unusual.”
For a few seconds the only sound in the bay was the quiet hum of instruments. Then she finally met my eyes.
“Lyrian bloodline.”
She said it evenly, but I’d known her long enough to hear it. That tone only came out when the results genuinely surprised her.
“How old?”
“Very.” She checked the display again. “Ninety-eight percent match.”
I looked at the girl on the platform. It was starting to make sense now, why the Draco had taken this kind of risk.
“The paralysis beam left no lasting damage,” Leia went on, “but her body’s still running on third-dimensional parameters.” She touched the capsule controls. “Without adaptation, waking up is going to be hard on her.”
“Begin.”
The transparent lid closed slowly. A soft silvery light rose inside the capsule.
I didn’t leave. I stood there until the readings began to even out.
“Aelion.” Arian’s voice reached me alone, over the private channel. “I ran a match on her field signature against the scans from the two ships that got away.”
“Go on.”
“There’s a close match aboard one of them. Same signature pattern, close enough to be family. Her mother, most likely, among those taken.”
I stood there, looking at the capsule, and said nothing for a moment.
“We’ll find her.”
“Acknowledged,” Arian said. No comment this time.
I stayed a while longer. The light inside the capsule moved slow and even. In a few hours she’d open her eyes into a world that, this morning, she couldn’t have imagined existed.
I didn’t know what I’d say to her, when that happened.
But I knew one thing for certain. I’d be there.

LYRA
I lay in the open capsule and looked at him.
He didn’t rush me. Didn’t lean closer, didn’t press me with questions, didn’t ask me to get up right away. He simply stood there, calm, still, as if holding a kind of space around me where I could come back to myself.
And still I felt his presence too sharply.
As if some part of me already knew exactly who was standing there.
That frightened me almost as much as everything else.
I already knew his name. Aelion.
Before I could ask him anything, I reached for my mother the only way I knew how, quietly, inside, the way I might have reached for a hand in the dark.
Nothing answered back.
The second question mattered more.
“Where’s my mother?”
My voice came out hoarse.
He didn’t answer right away. A hesitation, barely there, but enough to make everything inside me draw tight.
“Get up,” he said gently. “I’ll explain.”
Not later. Not calm down.
I held on to that like a handhold.
I tried to sit up. My body barely obeyed, not from pain, more from a kind of lingering weakness, like waking too fast. The capsule’s smooth surface slid beneath my palms.
Aelion held out his hand.
My mind said: careful. I was on an unfamiliar ship, among unfamiliar people. The last thing I remembered was black ships over Velara, blue beams, my mother’s hand.
But alongside that was something else. Something thin and insistent. As if refusing this hand meant losing something I’d been moving toward for longer than I could remember.
I put my hand in his.
The contact hit harder than it should have. Not pain, not a spark, more like two lines that had run apart for a long time suddenly remembering they’d once been one.
The warmth didn’t come from his fingers. It came from somewhere inside me.
For a fraction of a second, I thought I could see something: white light on stone steps, wind, the smell of unfamiliar flowers, a feeling so strong I nearly lost my balance.
Then it was gone. Only his hand remained. And his eyes.
He’d felt it too. I saw his jaw tighten, just for a moment.
I sat up, put my feet on the floor, stood. He let go of my hand the instant he saw I could stand on my own.
The room was large and bright, something like a medical bay, two rows of capsules lining it. The walls were white, pulsing faintly with soft light. Where I stood closest, the pulse seemed to slow, settling into something, my breathing, maybe.
“What happened? How did I get here?”
“Come with me,” he said. “I’ll explain on the way.”
We walked toward the far doors together.
“Three Draco ships appeared over Velara this morning,” he said. “We intercepted one. Yours.”
“And my mother?”
He looked at me, and that was when I understood. My chest tightened before he said a word.
“She was on the other ship,” I said.
“Yes. Two ships went through a portal before we could stop them.”
I waited to cry. I didn’t. Maybe my body hadn’t caught up yet. Or maybe, somewhere beneath all of it, I knew something that couldn’t be knowledge: she was alive. Not near, not here, but alive.
“But you’ll look for her?”
“Yes.”
One word. But it carried more than a fleet order. Something personal in it, though I didn’t ask why.
We passed through an archway into a wide corridor, and the light here was warmer. I stopped without meaning to and pressed my palm to the wall.
The wall shifted color under my hand and began to glow, faintly.
“It’s alive,” I said.
“Partly,” he said. “You’ll meet him properly soon.”
Him. I noted that.
“Why are they hunting us?” I asked, walking beside him again. “The women you’re looking for.”
“Carriers of a rare bloodline. A rare soul-line. An ancient one.” He looked straight ahead. “To them, it’s a resource. To us, it’s a crime.”
Cold moved down my spine.
“How long was I unconscious?”
“About six hours. The paralysis beam shuts down consciousness, not the body. The capsule handled the rest. You were born in the third dimension. This ship operates in the fourth. It eased the transition.”
“Eased it into what, exactly?”
“You’ll notice this soon,” he said. “You already understand every word I’m saying. Six hours ago, you wouldn’t have.”
I stopped.
He was right. I hadn’t noticed until he said it. The words had simply been arriving, already translated, as if I’d always known this language and only just remembered it.
“That’s not possible.”
“It is here,” he said. “Lyrian blood reads new systems faster than most. Yours especially.”
“Lyrian blood,” I repeated. My mother’s blood. The blood that let her feel things before they happened. The blood she’d passed to me, along with my name.
“Did it change me?”
“Not you,” he said. “Your field. The way you perceive. Your body is still yours.”
“And you? Were you born like this? Already in the fourth?”
“All of us are,” he said. “It’s not something we grow into. We’re just born that way.” A pause, weighing how much to hand me. “It’s also why we’re born already carrying the memory of past lives.”
I thought about that as we walked, about how my mother had stopped on the terrace, looked at the sky before anyone else noticed the ships. And wondered if she’d carried this in her all her life, quietly, and never told me what shape it took.
“What’s your name?” he asked suddenly.
I nearly smiled. We’d already covered war, abduction, portals, a language I was apparently already speaking. And only now, my name.
“Lyra.”
Something changed in his face, not sharply, just enough that I noticed.
“Lyra,” he repeated quietly.
“What?”
“That name means a great deal to my people,” he said. “I’ll tell you someday. Not now.”
Someday. I wonder when, I thought.
We reached a wide set of doors, and they opened toward us.
